In November 2011, Failte Minnesota established the Lar Burke scholarship at Listowel Writers Week; Ireland’s most prestigious literary festival. The scholarship honors both Burke’s own literary talent and his attendance, since 1993 at Writers Week.
Writers Week started as a small literary festival in the west of Ireland 47 years ago and has evolved into a festival known for bringing together the best and brightest authors in adult and children’s literature from around the world. The festival also includes theatre and musical performances, and as the Irish say the “craic is mighty”.
Failte Minnesota chose the scholarship as a way to honor Burke’s commitment to the written and spoken word throughout his life. He was a founding member of Na Fianna Irish Theatre group and the Lake Street Review literary publication, as well as being part of the Irish Books and Media team. Burke attended the Listowel Writers Week event in May 2012 and was honored at their opening ceremony where the Lar Burke scholarship was introduced. The scholarship is administrated through Listowel Writers Week and if you are interested in contributing to the scholarship please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
